Fire Department prepares for a busier than normal winter season

Over the past month, the fire department has been training hard, polishing up skills, and preparing for a possibly difficult winter season.  We are concerned that many people have installed their own alternative heating sources, and they might not be up to standard.  We are worried about any deficiencies that could lead to a carbon monoxide leak due to improper venting.  One recent incident in Brewer sent several people to the hospital.  We ask people to be careful of hot surfaces or flue gases that may ignite combustible materials that are too close.  Remember, “Space Heaters need Space”. The fire department would like to ask all residents to have their heating systems cleaned and maintained before it gets too late.  Don’t take chances, be safe.

This webpage provides links provided that can help.  If your insurance company is calling for a chimney inspection, click on the link for the Chimney Safety Institute of America.  They can provide a list of certified inspectors closest to our zip code available to inspect your chimney.  A “Certified” inspector is required for this purpose.  If you would like a “General Safety” inspection, the fire department will be glad to check your chimney and let you know if we find any problems.  To find someone to clean your chimney, click on the link for the National Chimney Sweep Guild.  Enter your zip code; the closest members will be displayed on the screen.  Wood stoves and chimneys should be cleaned every year.  Only burn seasoned wood, and remember you should never burn green wood.

Recently, Winslow and Waterville Firefighters participated in muster events at the State Federation of Fire Fighter’s Convention.  There was a team from each town and a hybrid team from both towns.  These three teams were responsible for claiming three first place, a second place, and a third place trophies.  This was a job well done and an excellent display of teamwork.

This teamwork, between Winslow and Waterville was put to
the test on October 6th, when a structure fire was reported at 116 Benton Avenue in Winslow, right next door to the Police and Fire Stations.  Fire was showing out the front door and side window, a woman was having difficulty breathing, and fire crews were needing help fast!  We called for help from the Waterville Fire Department to help at the scene, and Fairfield Fire Department to cover-in at the station.  All departments worked seamlessly and cooperatively together and did an excellent job.  Joint training is definitely paying off.

October 6, kicks off the National Fire Prevention Week.  Starting October 20th, Winslow Firefighters will be visiting the Elementary School and St. John’s to provide the latest and greatest in Public Fire Safety Education.  Lieutenant John Lacombe has been spearheading this effort and has assembled an excellent team to meet this task.  I expect many “Home Inspections” will be carried out by our newly deputized “Junior Fire Marshals”.  The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Stop Home Fires”.  Please help us meet this task.  Check for home hazards in your home, check and make sure there is a battery in your smoke detector, and practice a fire drill with your kids.  Make sure you have a meeting place so you know everyone has gotten out alive.
