Just a few minutes from the busy shops of downtown Freeport lies a peaceful world of quiet water, wetlands, and woods. The Florida Lake Loop is an easy, family-friendly trail that circles a shallow lake teeming with wildlife — a perfect place to stretch your legs, watch for birds and moose, and trade the crowds for birdsong. Here is what to know before you go.

Where Is Florida Lake?

Florida Lake is a 167-acre property owned by the Town of Freeport, in southern Maine's midcoast, just north of the famous shopping village that L.L.Bean calls home. The trails are reached from a well-marked turnoff along Route 125 (Wardtown Road) in north Freeport, where a small parking lot leads to the loop. It makes an easy, refreshing detour on any trip to the Freeport area.

The Loop Trail

The main Lake Loop is about 2.9 miles of mostly flat, easy walking that circles the shallow lake, passing through wetlands, streams, and mature forest. It follows the orange-blazed Lake Loop and the blue-blazed North Loop trails around the water's edge. If you want a shorter outing, a separate one-mile loop leads to a view of Collins Brook. The gentle terrain makes this a great walk for families, casual hikers, and anyone looking for a relaxed stroll in nature.

Wildlife and Wetlands

The real draw here is the wildlife. Florida Lake's shallow water and surrounding wetlands create excellent habitat, and the area is known for waterfowl and songbirds, beaver, deer, and even moose. Bring binoculars — the mix of open water, marsh, and forest makes this one of the better spots near Freeport for birding and quiet wildlife watching, especially in the early morning and evening.

A Freeport Conservation Trust Gem

Florida Lake is one of the northern parcels stewarded in partnership with the Freeport Conservation Trust, which since 1977 has protected well over 1,900 acres in and around the town. Thanks to that ongoing conservation work — and the Town of Freeport's ownership of the land — this beautiful lake and its trails remain open and free for everyone to enjoy.

Visiting Florida Lake

Come prepared for an easy woodland walk: comfortable shoes, water, and insect repellent in the warmer months, since the wetlands can be buggy. The flat trail is enjoyable in every season, from spring birdsong to fall foliage and even snowshoeing in winter. Trail maps are available from the Freeport Conservation Trust, and as always, stay on marked trails and pack out whatever you bring in.
