Just off the coast of Yarmouth, at the far end of a chain of bridges out into Casco Bay, lies a small, peaceful island with a big reward for those who seek it out. Littlejohn Island is home to a lovely little nature preserve where quiet trails wind past red oaks, rocky beaches, and sweeping views of the open water. It is one of those understated Maine places that feels like a secret — and it is free and open to all.

Where Is Littlejohn Island?

Littlejohn Island sits in Casco Bay, part of the town of Yarmouth, Maine. It is reached by road: from the mainland you cross first onto Cousins Island, then over a short bridge onto Littlejohn. The island is largely residential and quiet, and its northern tip is protected as a public nature preserve.

The Littlejohn Island Preserve

The Littlejohn Island Preserve is a 23-acre coastal preserve on the shores of Casco Bay, cared for by the Royal River Conservation Trust. It is a small gem of a place: stately red oaks that make fine perches for bald eagles and great horned owls, secluded rocky beaches, and beautiful ocean-front views in nearly every direction. It is a wonderful spot for a quiet walk, a picnic, or a bit of birdwatching.

The Trail

A roughly 1-mile loop trail carries you around the preserve, passing scenic viewpoints, tide pools, granite ledges, and a few well-placed picnic tables and benches. Note that the path crosses several split-log and plank bridges that call for good balance and shoes with traction — sturdy footwear is a must, especially when things are damp.

Getting There & Parking

Parking is very limited — only about four spaces at the Littlejohn Causeway (off Talbot Road on Cousins Island), near the Littlejohn Community House. Starting from there turns the outing into a longer round trip of about 3 miles, with a scenic walk along the tidal mudflats at low tide. Because space is so tight, arrive early, be respectful of neighbors, and follow Leave No Trace principles to help keep this small preserve open and pristine.

Wildlife & Tide Pools

Littlejohn is a fine place to slow down and look closely. Explore the tide pools along the rocky shore, watch for shorebirds and raptors overhead, and take in the changing moods of Casco Bay with the tide. It is a peaceful counterpoint to Maine's busier coastal attractions.

Visiting Tips

Check the tides before you go (the mudflat walk is best near low tide), wear traction footwear for the bridges, pack out everything you bring, and pair your visit with neighboring Cousins Island for a full Casco Bay afternoon. If you are exploring Maine from the Winslow–Waterville area, it makes a serene stop on a southern-coast day trip.
