East Grand Lake is a roughly 16,000-acre lake that straddles the Maine–New Brunswick border at Danforth. It is part of the Chiputneticook chain of lakes — together with Spednic, North, and Palfrey lakes — which form the headwaters of the St. Croix River. Big, clean, and largely undeveloped, it is one of the finest wilderness lakes in the eastern United States.

Fishing on East Grand Lake

East Grand Lake is best known for its fishing. Anglers come for smallmouth bass, landlocked Atlantic salmon, and lake trout (togue), along with perch, sunfish, and pickerel. It fishes well from ice-out through the open-water season, and in winter it becomes a major ice-fishing destination. Recreational spots such as Greenland Cove offer camping and lake access, making it easy to settle in for a few days on the water. (A current Maine fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.)

The Million Dollar Scenic View

The stretch of Route 1 that runs through Danforth and neighboring Weston has earned a fitting nickname: the “Million Dollar Scenic View.” On a clear day, the road opens up to sweeping vistas of lakes, forest, and rolling hills reaching toward the horizon — a reminder of just how wild and beautiful this corner of Maine remains.

A Bit of Town History

Danforth was first organized as a plantation in 1847 and incorporated as a town in 1860, taking its name from the proprietor Thomas Danforth. Like much of the region, it grew on timber and farming, and it remains a small, tight-knit community — home to fewer than 600 residents — that welcomes visitors drawn by the lake and the woods.
